Airdrie has an excellent education system, supporting more than 16,000 students across the city. However, many of our schools are operating well over capacity.
For example, my son’s high school, built for 1,300 students, now has over 1,600 students enrolled. Similarly, my daughter’s elementary/junior high school, designed for 900 students, currently serves over 1,062 students for K-8, and is switching to K-9 for the 2025/2026 school year. These numbers show just how urgently we need additional schools and infrastructure to support our growing population.
The Province has made some important commitments to help address these needs. In 2024, design funding was allocated for a new Southwest High School, along with planning funding for a new K–9 school in Southeast Airdrie, located in Lanark. Construction funding was also committed for two new K–9 schools. Looking ahead to 2025, construction funding is expected to move forward for the new Southwest High School as well.
Meanwhile, the City of Airdrie collects the Provincial Education Requisition—the education tax portion of your annual property tax bill—on behalf of the Province. This year alone, Airdrie residents will contribute nearly $50 million toward school operational funding in Alberta. While the Province continues to provide operational support for our schools, it’s clear that capital investments must accelerate to keep up with the pace of growth.
To maintain Airdrie’s high educational standards without continuing to pack schools beyond their intended capacity, City Council must work closely with Rocky View Schools. Ongoing communication, collaboration, and strong advocacy are critical to ensuring that future planning, funding, and construction stay ahead of our city's rapid growth. We owe it to our students, teachers, and families to create learning environments where everyone can thrive.
My commitment as a parent is to make education a top priority as Airdrie continues to grow. thus ensuring our students have the space, resources, and support they need to thrive. A well-educated Airdrie is the foundation for a safer and more involved Airdrie.
