Airdrie is one of the safest cities in Alberta, with crime rates consistently below the national average. However…
While violent crime in Airdrie remains relatively low, property crimes, such as theft, vandalism, and break-ins, are on the rise and have become a growing concern for many residents. Just as troubling is the increase in domestic violence cases within our community. This is a trend that demands attention, as it directly impacts the safety and well-being of individuals and families throughout Airdrie. And it also highlights the need for a local hospital, equipped with comprehensive programs and support services, to ensure that residents have access to timely help when they need it most.
Keeping our city safe requires a proactive, community-focused approach that goes beyond policing and enforcement. It’s about fostering a strong sense of community, addressing the root causes of crime, and ensuring residents feel secure in their homes and neighbourhoods. As a city council member, I will advocate for strengthening community policing efforts and increasing awareness of crime prevention programs. Airdrie already has great tools, such as the online crime reporting system for example, but we can do more to ensure residents are engaged in keeping their neighbourhoods safe. I want to see increased collaboration between local law enforcement, community groups, and residents to create a stronger, more connected approach to crime prevention.
I also believe that we should be tackling crime at its roots. Addressing socioeconomic factors, such as employment opportunities, youth engagement programs, and mental health support, can help reduce the risk of crime in the long term. I will push for more community development initiatives that provide resources for families, create positive outlets for youth, and support those struggling with mental health and substance abuse. Additionally, addressing domestic violence requires increased support for crisis services, shelters, and counseling programs to ensure that survivors have access to the help they need.
Safety is about how people feel in their city and not just statistics. No one should feel unsafe in their own home. My commitment is to ensuring Airdrie remains one of the safest and most secure communities in Alberta through proactive leadership, smart policy-making, and strong community engagement.
